Salazar Awards

In honour of designer/instructor Enrique Salazar (a founder of the BC Chapter of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada), this annual event recognizes up-and-coming design students. The poster features a medal—symbolizing individual effort & recognition—made up of Salazar's profile with text about "Nurturing Creativity", the 2009 theme. On the reverse side is a fun message inspired by his personal standards. Eventually the main graphic was adopted as a logo for subsequent Salazar Awards, of which I've been a guest judge in 2012 and 2014, as well as a winner in 1991.

Sugoi

Sugoi is a 20-year old technical cycling apparel company founded in Vancouver. As their brand evolved to embrace runners and triathletes, a refreshed identity was initiated. The logo symbolizes a stylized S figure striving ahead, communicating the brand's forward momentum and representing core strength emanating from within. Supported by custom typography, the modern identity embodies energy, boldness, technical innovation and quality.

Pinter Creative Studio

Steve Pinter is one of the most experienced digital retouchers and creative imagemakers in Canada, and my friend. With decades of studio knowledge in traditional prepress and digital imaging at various Vancouver production & advertising shops, Steve was ready to go solo. Having worked together professionally, the logomark whimsically captures what he is is recognized for: his black skullcap, his moustache and his focused eye for sharp detail and realism.

North Shore Spirit Trail

The Spirit Trail is a waterfront-oriented, multi-use pathway connecting multiple communities together. Stretching from West to North Vancouver, this 35km greenway enables locals to bike, skate, run or walk throughout trails across the North Shore. The simple hand-drawn mark merges human traits with the distinctive lines of a North Shore landscape in a style that references the stone carvings of our Native ancestors.

Exchange-A-Blade

EAB (Exchange-A-Blade) provides building trades with high quality power tool accessories at competitive prices. The graphic shape surrounding the logotype is inspired from the carbide tip found in EAB's best-selling saw blades while the angled shape conveys an active, forward momentum found in their powerful cutting and drill products. StaySharp—their non-exchangable blade product line—was given the same slanted treatment and graphic A in the logotype thus creating a connection between both brands and reinforcing the sense of sharpness in the letterforms.

Backstory Documentary Films

Backstory Documentary Films tells the stories behind great people, things & ideas. Founded by Los Angeles documentary filmmaker, Helmut Kobler, Backstory gives viewers something real to believe in through compelling storytelling with a deeper human focus. The logo developed from the idea that documentaries reveal the background of something, investigating history and deeper recollections in order to bring forth a fuller understanding of it.

Nextbus

Nextbus provides accurate, real-time arrival info at transit stops and online, allowing users to track vehicles on their phones or computers in order to save time, stay safe and plan schedules. The 2-arrowed logomark alludes to the speed and efficiency of the service, while making the technology involved behind the scenes virtually invisible to the user. An alternate logo proposal emphasized the "bus" side of the name, highlighting the traceable route from point A to B.

The Roundtable

The Roundtable is an initiative to serve the calling and aspirations of Christian philanthropists, exploring what it means to give in the 21st Century. The handdrawn icon in connection with the elegant simplicity of the logotype bridges the concept of "ancient modern" by putting a human face behind the act of giving via modern means.

When Austen Met Ultraman...

Unlike Harry & Sally, everyone else knew this couple were meant to be together. Like Harry & Sally, the courtship was long yet beautifully anticipated by friends and family. The invitation—an homage to Joan's love of Jane Austen and Ed's fanaticism of Japanese superhero Ultraman—shows that some matches were just meant to be.

Logo Design

I’m often asked to develop concept work in the form of numerous briskly sketched ideas or digital comps. Although the finished work may be completed by other creatives, I am always grateful for the regular work, knowing I am valued by creative directors and clients for my speed, flexibility, quick-thinking and wealth of ideation output. No design project is too small, where the need is just as great to convey the right brand personality of a given product or service that is uniquely theirs to own.
